The word read can be pronounced in two different ways:

Example Please read the instructions.   Note: Read is pronouned reed when it's about something in the present, now.
Example I read that book last week.   Note: Read is pronouned red when it's about something in the past, and finished.
Example I was reading about cats.   Note: This is also about something in the past, but is pronounced reeding, not reding.

The words hear and here sound the same:

Example Did you hear what I said?   Note: Said is pronouned sed. It's about something in the past, and finished.
Example I'll wait here for you.   Means: At this place.
